Almost three years to the day after a 14-year-old died in a fatal Davenport shooting, a 20-year-old man was sentenced to prison as the third suspect in the case.
Earlier, a jury found John Hanes III guilty of first-degree murder and also intimidation with a dangerous weapon – injury or provoke fear.
In a lengthy sentencing hearing, Judge John Telleen sentenced Hanes to life with the possibility of parole after 20 years.
The mother of the victim, 14-year-old Jamon Winfrey, testified Friday she did not think Hanes felt remorse for his actions.
In a sentencing memorandum, Hanes’ attorney, Beau Bergmann, said Hanes’ involvement with the judiciary “slowly progressed to higher and higher levels.”
In the memo, Bergmann mentions “the culture which John was living (in) at the time. Photos taken from cellular phones depict not only John but others brandishing firearms at the camera with wide smiles on their faces.” He called them “kids who were living a fantasy.”
“Without doubt, there will come a day in the future when John looks back upon his youth with much regret,” the memo says.
The incident in 2021
Davenport Police responded to gunfire shortly before 4:30 p.m. Feb. 24, 2021, near the 1300 block of Farnam Street, according to an arrest affidavit.
Hanes and two other people blocked the victim’s vehicle in, causing it to stop in the roadway. Two defendants from a suspect vehicle fired at Jamon Winfrey, struck him once, then fled the scene, arrest affidavits say.
At the time, officers found fired cartridge cases, but no injuries or damage. Jamon Winfrey was found fatally shot the next day in a yard in the 1300 block of Farnam Street.
The other defendants
Chrystian Smith was sentenced to up to 25 years after he pleaded guilty to attempted murder in connection with the incident.
Also in connection with the death, Javon Combs pleaded guilty to three counts of intimidation with a dangerous weapon – injure/provoke fear and willful injury – causing serious injury, court records show. He was sentenced to serve no more than 10 years for each of these charges, with the sentences to be served consecutively, or one after the other.
