Gwen Stefani's husband, Gavin Rossdale has admitted he had a gay affair with a flamboyant pop star when he was 17.
In a magazine interview the London-born Bush frontman confirmed the much-rumoured relationship with 1980's New Romantic gender bender, Marilyn, branding it a ‘one-time experimentation’.
According to U.S. reports, however, he immediately begged the magazine’s editors not to publish his confession, apparently because wife Gwen Stefani did not know about the dalliance.

Sources said she was aware of the rumours but her husband’s candour meant that for the first time he had to tell her they were true.
The claims first surfaced in Boy George’s 1995 autobiography ‘Take It Like a Man’ and last year Marilyn repeated them, claiming the affair went on for five years.
Asked why he has waited until now to speak out, Rossdale, 44, said he was scared of ruining his career.
‘I think at the outset there was a sort of fear—that was right at the beginning of Bush, and I didn't want it to be part of it,’ he said.
‘ It felt like a cheap shot, so I was like, ‘I'm not getting involved.’ I've never wanted to appear closed about it.

‘It's not something I've talked about really because it's always been in the glare of a tabloid world.
‘It's just one of those things: Move on. When you're 17, Jesus Christ. I don't think there's anything strange about any form of—you're learning about life. It's a part of growing up. That's it. No more, no less.’
Asked if it was just a one-time experimentation, he replied: ‘Yeah. That was it. You have to know what you like, and I know what I like.’
Immediately after giving the interview, however, Rossdale is said to have ‘pleaded’ with the editors of Details magazine not to include his admission in the interview, but they refused.
Nobody for Rossdale was available for comment.
Happy family: Gavin reportedly asked for the interview to be pulled because his wife, Gwen Stefani, was unaware of the affair
Whilst relatively unknown in Britain, Bush are one of the biggest rock acts in the U.S. and have seen their records go platinum many times over.
Almost immediately after releasing their 1994 album Sixteen Stone they went from playing in pubs in London to stadiums in the U.S. and have not looked back since.
He met Stefani, 41 in 1996 when she was singer in No Doubt and they married six years later - they now have two children, Kingston, four, and Zuma, two.

Last year he said in an interview that he and Rossdale had been involved with each other for five years.
He added that because in 1995 when Boy George wrote about their affair Bush was just becoming successful in the U.S. so he ‘agreed to lie against every grain of my being’ to help Rossdale.

This isn't the first secret Rossdale has kept from his wife.
Stefani was said to be 'devastated' to learn that Rossdale had fathered a love child, British model Daisy Lowe.
Rossdale had engaged in a brief affair when he was a teenager with Daisy's mother, Pearl, who is now married to Supergrass drummer Danny Goffey.
She had always wondered if Rossdale was Daisy's father and when she reached the age of fifteen mother and daughter felt it was time to find out.
Rossdale, who at that time was married to Stefani but had yet to have any children together, agreed to a DNA test which subsequently proved that he was indeed the father.
Ironically Rossdale had actually been appointed as Daisy's godfather and the pair had spoken regularly on the phone while she was growing up.
However, it has been widely reported that since receiving the DNA results Rossdale has not communicated with his daughter at all.
